4 Important Fountain Maintenance Tips

Spring is here and the summer months are approaching! It’s time to get your fountain ready for action. Follow these four fountain maintenance tips to take to ensure your fountain is clean and ready for the warm weather:

1. Clean Fountain

Before you fill your fountain with water, it’s a good idea to clean the surface of your fountain. This can be done by simply spraying with a hose or scrubbing the area with nylon brush. Cleaning your fountain will get rid of dirt, bird deposits and other remnants from the colder months. Chase the dirty water out or down the fountain drain. This will keep the area clean and ready for fresh water.

2. Clean Pump and Debris

It’s critical to clean out the pump and remove debris. Many items such as pollen, leaves and dirt may be clogging your fountain. To clean the pump, remove the pump cover and clean the filter. Another option to remove buildup in the pump is to gently scrub away algae and other debris with an old toothbrush.  For a more thorough clean, twist off the impeller cover and carefully pull out the impeller.  This is simply held in place by a magnet.  Clean the inside cavity and the impeller parts with the toothbrush.

3. Replace Water

As your fountain is running during the summer, remember the water may need to be replaced monthly if you have a smaller fountain and are not treating your water.  Also, your fountain should be drained annually if you live in a freezing climate. When you replace the water, it will not only provide you with cleaner water and better flow, it will help to flush out dirt and other waste that may have been building up in the water supply.

4. Test Pump

After you clear your pump from debris, make sure your pump is functioning properly. Testing your pump after cleaning it, and prior to filling the fountain, will ensure a functioning system.

Following these steps will help keep your fountain beautiful and functioning for years to come! If you need a new pump, see our selection here. Below, you can download our free maintenance checklist to learn more about caring for your fountain!
